In the world of research laboratories, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is a cutting-edge instrument capable of providing detailed topography and chemical composition of solid objects at the micro to nanometer scale. The basic principle of this SEM is to read the electron fluorescence from an object bombarded with electrons by an electron gun. This electron fluorescence is detected by a backscattered electron detector and a secondary electron detector, sometimes also equipped with an x-ray detector. These two primary detectors will provide data to the processor to be able to produce an image of the surface of the observed object.
